Biography
Anisa Shomo, MD (she/her) is a Family Medicine physician with many interests. She currently serves as Director of Family Medicine Scholars and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati.
Education and Training
Dr. Shomo graduated from The Ohio State University with a BA in Spanish and she is a member of Alpha Psi Lambda, the nation's first coed Latinx fraternity. She receiver her MD degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She trained in Family Medicine residency and Geriatric fellowship at the University of Cincinnati/The Christ Hospital. Since then she has worked in school based health, nursing home facilities, global health, and underserved clinics during various points in her career.
Personal Life
Dr. Shomo and her husband met in Honors Chemistry when they were freshmen in college. They wed during their residencies. Her hobbies include traveling, salsa dancing, and running. She has served as Black Girls Run! Ambassador for Cincinnati. She is also a Cervical Cancer survivor.
Early Life
Dr. Shomo was born and raised in urban Cleveland, Ohio and she is a graduate of Shaw High School in East Cleveland. Her parents owed a local bakery and she is the sixth child of nine. She had a chaotic childhood and her parents divorced when she was 12. After this she struggled with depression and her grades suffered during middle school. Upon starting high school she was determined to rededicate herself to her childhood dream of becoming a physician. She earned a 3.97 GPA in high school (the highest unweighted GPA of her high school) while working in the family business and helping to care for younger siblings and other family members. She also became a leader in service clubs and participated in service opportunities routinely. She was a member of Drama Club and Trivia Club as well.
Impact
Dr. Shomo's childhood experience has been one of her inspirations for dedicating her career to underserved care with children, adolescents, and adults. She is a community leader who works on a number of school and community initiatives to improve the physical and mental health of youth and their families. She also is involved in mentoring young people who are interested in becoming physicians. Under the moniker of "DR SHOMO KNOWS" she discusses different health topics, social justice, and healthy coping. She recently wrote a book on trauma and healing: Health is Love
